Quetsch ’n’ Vibes*

Styrian accordion meets vibraphone and marimba – three musicians reinventing Austria’s folk music, from Strauss and Bach to their own compositions.

Quetschn: Styrian slang for the accordion. Vibes: jazz slang for the vibraphone. In between: everything that sounds.

The trio

Rooted and borderless.

Folk music doesn’t always have to wear the same costume – with different instruments it can sound entirely new. Jonny Kölbl, Leo Waltersdorfer and Hannes Schöggl prove it in the most charming way.

The three musicians rethink Austria’s traditional music and have made it their mission to carry the instrument of their home – the Styrian accordion – into all kinds of styles: with vibraphone and marimba, handpans and mbira, all the way to the singing saw.

In new arrangements and original compositions the trio opens up to other styles, turning tradition into something excitingly new that shines in vibrant musical colours – rooted and borderless at once.

Jonny Kölbl

Styrian accordion, percussion

In Quetsch ’n’ Vibes, Jonny is mostly heard on the Styrian accordion – yet he is actually a drummer with a jazz degree from Graz. He delivers the groove on drums he builds himself in his own workshop under the name “JoKo Drums”. A true all-rounder, he plays in countless other bands, as drummer and as “Harmonikist”.

Vibraphone, mbira, handpan

Besides his position in the stage orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, Leo appears with many Austrian orchestras, including the Vienna and Graz Philharmonic. In Quetsch ’n’ Vibes he stands behind the vibraphone – an instrument he also composes for, with pieces performed worldwide. RAV drum, mbira and handpan are part of his toolkit, too.

Hannes Schöggl

Marimba, percussion

Winner of the “1st Prize and Grand Prix de Marimba” at Drumfest 2016, Hannes is the marimba specialist of the trio. He is as active as a teacher as he is as a soloist and in ensembles for contemporary music such as Ensemble XX. Jahrhundert.

The duo · new programme

Between mountains and open horizons.

As a duo, Jonny Kölbl and Leo Waltersdorfer tour with a newly developed programme of their own, where Alpine and Nordic traditions meet.

The shimmering tones of the vibraphone, the earthy resonance of the mbira and the ethereal depth of the handpans merge with the Styrian accordion. Melodies from the past intertwine with contemporary influences; tradition is gently reshaped – rooted, open-minded, in flow.
